Massey Cancer Center provides patient care and Cancer research, treating more than 50 types of Cancer.  Muti-disciplinary teams work together under one roof, ensuring a high level of communication and making appointments easier for patients.  They are organized by disease type and include medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, advance practice nurses, clinical research nurses and social workers, among others.  Patients visiting Massey Cancer benefit from the team approach and expertise.

The VCU Massey Cancer Center has had many research breakthroughs thanks to the generosity of thousands of donors.  Gifs of all sizes from individuals, foundations and corporations help ensure that Massey physicians, scientists and researchers have resources to bring their discoveries from the lab to the patients.

During a recent visit to the Massey Cancer Center, Doctors and Researchers shared with guests

from the Virginia Moose Association their recent research accomplishments in the Fight against Cancer.  Visitors also got a chance to view Brain Tumor and Breast Cancer research in progress.

10th Annual Roy D. Groome

VMA -- VCU Basketball For Massey Cancer

posted 01/22/2009

For the ninth year, the Virginia Moose Association will host the VMA night for VCU Basketball to benefit The Massey Cancer Center.  Last year this program raised $5,000.00.  Over the 10 years since Roy planted the seed that started this program the Virginia Moose Association has raised over $31,000.00 for Massey Cancer.  Our Goal is to raise $5,000.00 as we did last year and of course, we are wishing for a little increase.  Dig deep guys, this is for Massey Cancer.  On Wednesday, February 11th, 2009, we will be hosting the game between VCU and James Madison University.  As an avid VCU Ram Basketball Fan, I am expecting a great year for our team.  This year VCU is picked to be first in the CAA Conference.  Game time is 7:30 P.M. at the Siegel Center in Richmond.  Tickets will be $10.00 each with $5.00 per ticket going to The Massey Cancer Center. These are $12.00 tickets.

The proceeds will again this year, be donated in honor of our late brother, Roy D. Groome, Sr.  Roy was very involved in the VMA’s efforts to support the invaluable research being done at The Massey Cancer Research Center.  We would like for each Lodge, Chapter and/or Moose Legion Committee to hopefully purchase fifty (50) tickets, or whatever number of tickets you feel comfortable with.  Please contact any of the Committee Members listed below for your tickets.  Make your checks payable to VMA Massey Cancer.  This will be a very special evening for the Virginia Moose Association, Virginia Commonwealth University, The Massey Cancer Center and the Groome family.

We are sincerely hoping to fill the stands and anyone who would like to purchase tickets and are not able to attend; we have a perfect solution.  They can be donated to a youth organization.  One of their own choosing or VCU has a wonderful program for kids called “The Rams Assisting Youth Program”, (THE RAY PROGRAM), which plays right into the Community Service goal of our lodges and chapters.  This provides an opportunity for the youth in our area to attend a VCU Men’s Basketball Game, free of charge. Any Lodge, Moose Legion Committee or Chapter who purchases tickets and would like to send them to one of these Community Outreach Youth Organizations would be acknowledged at the game.  They will also receive a letter from the sponsored group showing their appreciation and acknowledging their community service support.   Please be sure the tickets you wish to donate are sent to Carol Groome, Honorary Co-Chairman, c/o Sandston Lodge # 1937, 4505 Oakley’s Lane, Richmond, VA 23231, as soon as possible or at least two weeks prior to the game for distribution.  Last year many kids were sponsored by the VMA through the RAY Program.  There could be no better tribute to Roy Groome then to make this night at VCU another Moose success, thus supporting two of his passions, The Massey Cancer Research Center and the Moose Community Service Program.
