Thirty teams from all over
the state gathered Saturday in Bedford for a two-day Special Olympics
softball tournament -- and the rain Sunday afternoon didn't stop them
from playing out their games.
"We've had some wet award ceremonies out on the field," said Tina
Andes, director of Special Olympics for central Virginia. The players
didn't seem to mind lining up in the rain to get their medals and
ribbons, she said.
In an opening ceremony Saturday night at Moose Lodge No. 1897
alongside U.S. 460, the event's organizers celebrated its 15th year. The
event is co-sponsored by the Virginia Moose Association.
The teams were treated that night to fireworks and an air show; three
parachutists landed in a ball field behind the lodge -- one at first
base, one at third base and one at center field.
The games were spread across nine fields in four locations. Among the
teams playing: the Bedford Moose from Lynchburg; the Highlanders from
Buena Vista, Covington and Lexington; and two teams from Blacksburg, the
NRV Hokies and the Rock Solid.
About noon Sunday, 37-year-old Louis Hayton of Radford put on his
batting helmet as rain began to sprinkle. He said he didn't mind the
rain at all. "Feels better than the sun."
Hayton said he's been involved with Special Olympics for eight years.
His fiancee had come that day to watch him play shortstop and to cheer
on his team, the Rock Solid, with teammates mostly from Blacksburg and
Radford and a coach from Roanoke.
Ronald Riazzi was playing for Rock Solid with a hand wrapped in
gauze. He couldn't immediately remember how long he'd been playing for
the team, so the 25-year-old Radford man turned to Hayton. "I've been
playing for how long, Louis?" His teammate immediately quipped back,
"Too long," which prompted a brief, friendly grappling match in the
dugout.
Blacksburg resident Nate Calhoun, 19, said he thought his team's play
had been a bit erratic that weekend. "It's kind of like the New York
Yankees," he said, adding, "I don't like the Yankees."
Curtis Lucas of Pilot seemed a little quieter and shyer than his
teammates. The 39-year-old, who works for the Christiansburg sanitation
department, was playing for the first time. He prefers volleyball, he
said, but didn't mind the softball game. "It's different. It's something
to do."
On some of the teams, like the Rock Solid and its opponent in that
game, the Henrico Hurricanes, people with and without special needs play
on the same team. It allows friends or siblings to play together, gives
the volunteers a chance to play, and can help the special needs players
improve their game.
After a Hurricane player accumulated two strikes, Rock Solid pitcher
Gary Johansen told the player to swing the bat so he could see where to
throw the ball. "Show me where you want it."
Johansen aimed, and the next swing resulted in a line drive.
"It's a hitter's game," said Rock Solid coach Jim Dudley. "Everybody
should hit, put the ball in play and see what happens then."
Not long after, 32-year-old Graham Wright of the Hurricanes nailed
the ball well into the outfield. Unfortunately for him, Rock Solid's
Tyler Schuster, 22, made an even more spectacular catch.
Wright quickly recovered his good cheer. His mother, New Kent County
resident Elizabeth Holt, had come to see the tournament for the first
time.
"He always makes me put it on the calendar," she said. "Graham loves
Bedford. It's his favorite tournament."
Though Rock Solid ultimately
lost to the Hurricanes by one run, 19-18, Calhoun seemed satisfied at
the end of the game. "We came back from a seven-run deficit," he said.
"I don't think there's a college team that could score so many runs."
