TIPS ( Training for Intervention ProcedureS ) and CAPS (
Continuous Accident Prevention )
Ray Mullaney
-- Caps & Tips Chairman
As Printed in the Official Office Manual for Moose Lodges

By now, every Lodge should know that all their servers of alcohol are
required to be certified in either the TIPS (Training for Intervention
ProcedureS) program or another state/provincial approved server training
program. We also strongly recommend that social quarters managers
and all officers attend a class so they are familiar with the laws and
can support their bartenders’ efforts. Regardless of the program
you use, all servers are required to be recertified every three years.
You are responsible to
make sure copies of the servers’ certificates or cards are available for
onsite inspection and that copies are sent to the Risk Management
Department at Moose International.
They may be
sent by fax (6308596624), email or regular mail

Alcohol Server Certification Board Resolution
Each Lodge is required to
have the Board of Officers sign a resolution pledging that all persons
involved in serving alcoholic beverages under their license will have
current, up to date training certification, that all such persons will
obtain recertification prior to expiration and that all new employees
and volunteers will obtain training certification within 30 days of
assuming server duties and will only work under the supervision of a
certified bartender during that time.
This Resolution is
available on the Risk Management Web pages at Moose International, and
must be sent to the Risk management Department. This form cannot
be revoked by the board so it is now binding on all future boards of
each lodge. If your lodge completed the old form, you must now
complete and submit the new form. |

Moose International has mandated that all persons serving alcohol
beverages in any Moose Lodge be trained and certified in any approved
responsible beverage service program. This applies to all persons
serving alcohol beverages; that is, bartenders, waitresses/waiters, or
any other category of persons delivering beverages to patrons.
This includes volunteer bartenders, and volunteer servers.
The Virginia Moose Lodges
have four Certified TIPS Trainers located in various parts of the state
so there should be no difficulty for any Lodge to arrange for beverage
server training. The Certified Trainers and their contact
information is listed at the top of this document. Additionally,
most major beverage distributors have a TIPS Trainer on-staff, so “in a
pinch”, they may be contacted.
The in-class training
method is preferred as our trainers cover not only server training, but
material that Social Quarters Managers must know to comply with State of
Virginia laws, as well as material specific to the Loyal Order of Moose.
However, in cases where it is impossible for a server to attend an
in-class training session, there is an on-line version of the TIPS
program at www.gettips.com.
By arrangement with Moose International, Health Communications Inc (HCI)
offers a discount to Moose servers, if the promotional code “Moose08” is
typed on the “Review Registration” page. The regular on-line
registration is $40.00, but with the 40% discount it is only $24.00.
Here are the instructions for registering for on-line certification.:
1. Go to
www.gettips.com/eTIPS.shtml
2. Click on “Take Online Course”.
3. Complete the registration form and click on “Register”.
(Select training for "restaurant, bar, hotel, nightclub, or movie
theater) You
will receive a short state regulatory message before coming to the
payment form.
4. On the payment form, be sure to type Moose08 in the promotional
code field.
5. Complete the payment information (credit cards only), (be sure to
type "Moose08" in the promotion code field), and take the eTIPS course.
Social Quarters Managers are reminded that if a new server is hired,
he/she must be trained and certified within 30 days. He/she may
work under the supervision of a certified server during that 30 day
period.
Lodges may contact a
trainer directly. Anyone having questions about the TIPS program
should contact Jerry Lloyd, (Certified TiPS Trainer) at (804) 472-2450
or igl@crosslink.net. |

Virginia Moose Association - Discussion Group:
| Officers,
Administrators, and other Office Staff from Virginia Lodges, Women of
the Moose, Districts and Moose Legions are invited to join this member
only group to share information, handy tips, and troubleshooting
information.
New members will request membership to the group using
a Yahoo ID. If you don't have an ID then the process is simple for
creating a Yahoo ID. Your request is submitted to the group
administrator, (which at this time is the webmaster for the VMA Web
page), and then granted after your request.
This group not only provides a message board to share
ideas and solutions but also can store files, photos, links, and a
calendar to share with all group members. |
