One of
the basic precepts of the Loyal Order of Moose is that "no institution
that labors for self and self alone can remain great and mighty, and serve
posterity." Therefore, the two highest degrees conferred on members of the
Moose Fraternity are bestowed as a reward for devotion and service to the
philanthropic programs of the Order. These are the Fellowship and the
Pilgrim Degree of Merit.
When a man is enrolled into the Loyal Order of
Moose, he automatically becomes a member of the first degree.
As a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, you may be asked to join the
Moose Legion, which is the second degree in your advancement within the
fraternity. A good standing
member becomes eligible for advancement to the Second Degree, ( The Moose
Legion Degree of Service ), after he has completed one year of membership
and has sponsored one member into the lodge OR has completed six months of
membership and sponsored three members in to the lodge. |
|
Only those members,
who have shown a genuine desire to help their communities and their
Lodge are asked to become Moose Legionnaires. This second degree allows these men another way to
serve their fellow man. |
| The Moose
Legion will open many new opportunities to you in your Lodge.
Theme parties, sporting events, community service projects and other
unique activities for you and your family. Special social
activities called Moose Legion Celebrations are scheduled at various
Lodges within the membership region of each area Moose Legion. |

Memo from
Bruce Berger, President of Moose Legion
July, 2010
I would like
to begin my first message to you as President with a note of
thanks. I would like to extend my most heartfelt thanks to all
who attended not only the International Conference but all
Moose Legion events that were scheduled. What a tremendous
turn out for the Moose Legion Fun Night but also for the Moose
Legion breakfast. A very special thanks to the PMA guys and
gals for a tremendous parade and welcome!!!!!!
On the Move
I am hoping
everyone is ready to jump on the Moose Legion Express, which
is On the Move to 100,000 members by 2013. The only way we can
accomplish our goal is with your help. We MUST have active
Lodge Moose Legion Committees in place to have those special
functions and pricing for Moose Legionnaires only.
THE TIME IS
NOW that we close the back door not only in the Moose Legion
but also the Lodge. Every Moose Legion Committee should be
receiving a qualified list and an arrears list from your
jurisdiction Secretary, if you are not, please notify your
Moose Legion President or Ambassador to inform them of your
problem.
THE TIME IS
NOW to sponsor at least two members in the lodge and in the
Moose Legion. Remember, when you sponsor two members that get
enrolled during the year – your next year’s DUES are FREE !
This is true for both the lodge and the Moose Legion.
Special Project
Our special
project for this year is Lighting the Way to Mooseheart’s
Centennial. We as Moose Legionnaires have always been known to
go that extra mile. With this years project we are no
different. There are many cement light fixtures that need to
be replaced. The goal is $105,000.00 to be raised.
Those Moose Legions that complete their commitment by April
30th, 2011 will have special recognition on the newly
installed light poles. Don’t forget to take advantage of the
discount program. Moose Legions paying their complete
commitment by November 30th following the Triple Play program
in November will receive a 20% discount and those Moose
Legions completing their commitment by February 28th, 2011
will receive a 10% discount. WHAT A DEAL!!!!!!
President’s Project
In continuing
with tradition I am having a special President’s project.
Mooseheart schools are in need of a software program that is
needed to do grading, scheduling and other administration
duties, which are now being done manually. I know you feel as
I do that our children deserve the best, so I have selected
this project.
The cost of
the software, training and etc. is $15,000. A grant has been
applied for that may or may not cover up to $10,000. If the
grant is received the excess funds will be used to purchase
home appliances for various homes on campus.
I am hoping
you will support this project by having each jurisdiction hold
a fundraiser during the year. I know you will not let our
children down. Many thanks in advance!!!!!!!
Sincerely & Fraternally

“THE TIME IS NOW”
MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
for 2010-2011
Our new program was announced at
Nashville and started on June 1st. For one member, a sponsor
will earn a Moose Legion red, white and purple lapel pin. For
sponsoring and enrolling two members a FREE YEAR’S DUES will
be earned in the Moose Legion. For life members who do not
have a membership where a year’s dues can be paid – We’ve Got
You Covered with a windproof Umbrella.
Medal of Honor will remain in place for those achieving a
lifetime record of at least 50 membership units. New
qualifiers and those current holders who sponsor at least 5
members will be invited to the Moose 25 Club party in Anaheim.
Of course the Elite Moose Legionnaire Ring will continue to be
awarded to those sponsors with an accumulative total of 100 or
more membership units. There are several members well within
reach of this plateau!
Please see the campaign poster on
www.mooseintl.org website under the Moose Legion portal –
Membership section. It can be downloaded and printed for your
use and display. A printed 11 x 17 copy was mailed to each
lodge of the Order along with the lodge membership campaign
material.
Active Moose Legion Membership
is the real key
Our sincere appreciation and
congratulations are extended to each sponsor during the past 2
months. Thank you for fulfilling your pledge and helping to
strengthen our active membership. Lets keep it up!
We need to work our “D” lists as well. Retaining those
members we have is really important also. Personal contact of
those on the list of non-paid dues is the key we need turned
to really start things going upward. We as Moose Legionnaires
should be assisting in both the lodge and Moose Legion to
retain all possible members.
Nashville – Thanks for a great Conference / Convention
The registration numbers for our
Nashville meetings were great. We experienced some of the best
turnouts in years. Our sincere thanks to all the members for
your support and to the city of Nashville for a great job
hosting us!
The topical meeting attendance was good as expected and the
1500 person turnout for Moose Legion Fun Night with Rick K and
the All Nighters was all we expected and much more! The Moose
Legion Breakfast had great attendance of around 1,050 and many
of our leaders were recognized for their individual and
collective accomplishments!
Nashville Ritual Competition
The Ritual competition went smoothly.
We had 30 staffs competing, which was an increase over last
year. We thank all our staffs for conferring the Degree of
Service on our new members all year long! Done properly –
this aspect of our program can itself lend a great hand in
retention of members as they come to understand the real
philanthropic happenings of our organization.
Congratulations to WENOCA MOOSE LEGION No. 78 from North
Carolina – our new International Ritual Championship team!!
Great job guys!
Daniel E. Totten from Maumee Valley Moose Legion No. 30 in
Ohio was the top scoring ritualist with a terrific score of
99.16666, which helped his team reach the 2nd place spot.
Congratulations to Maumee Valley.
Kanawha Valley, WV Moose Legion Legion came in a close 3rd,
followed by Volunteer, TN No. 12 in 4th and 5th went to South
Florida No. 46.
Thanks to all our ritual teams that competed. We also extend
our appreciation to the judging staff for another great job.
See everyone in Anaheim next year!
Moose Legionnaire of the Year
Has your Lodge Moose Legion Committee
met and selected a nominee for this Honor? Has the form been
filled out and a resume been written? If you have – thank you.
If you have not – it is time to get on the move and do so!
Those forms are due at International postmarked by July 15th!!
Has your jurisdiction scheduled a meeting of the Past
Presidents and Past North Moose to review the lodge resumes
and select the jurisdiction’s winner to submit? The Jr Past
President is Chairman of the committee. As soon as they are
all turned in - this should be finalized and the winner
submitted for further judging. These are to be in by Sept
1st.
This is an opportunity to say thank you to some individual – a
member who has done something to help your lodge progress,
especially in the past year. Please take the time to offer
your appreciation to a member for supporting our causes
through your unit of the Order. Every lodge and every Moose
Legion jurisdiction should have a nominee submitted. Our
congratulations to all our upcoming nominees!
The lodge nominations are due by July 15th. The jurisdiction
meetings can take place and those winners can then be selected
and submitted. Many lodge forms were in early and we thank
you for your diligence!
Moose Legion Annual Project
This past year was another banner year
for Moose Legion projects. Once again, we had 100% of our
jurisdictions complete 100% of their obligations to our
capital project, which was the Mooseheart vans this past
year. In addition they all gave to the Endowment Fund, and to
the Youth Awareness Scholarship Fund. Several jurisdictions
contributed to the Mooseheart J J Davis home trip to
Moosehaven and in the annual International President’s
projects. Our thanks to all that helped achieve those goals!
As is customarily the case, the Moose Legion has agreed to
take on a capital project again this year for our beloved
Order. This year we will be helping to Light the Way towards
Mooseheart’s Centennial as we raise funds to replace a number
of cast cement light poles on the Mooseheart campus. All
jurisdictions will be scheduling various activities and
holding fundraising events to finance this safety & security
project. Our sincere thanks in advance for these efforts.
Moose Legion Centennial
The Moose Legion shares a place in
history with Mooseheart. It is the year 1913 that both these
entities got their beginnings. It is in 2013 that both will
celebrate our centennials. Plans are being formulated now to
commemorate this occasion in our history. Our goal for the
celebration is to reach 100,000 Mosoe Legion members.
Aggressive yes – but doable – if we work at it with zest and
determination. Watch for more details to follow.

History:
History of the Moose Legion
The "Moose Legion" or "Degree of Service" was created by resolution
during the annual convention of the Supreme Lodge in Cincinnati, Ohio,
and adopted by the Supreme Council in 1913 as the "Mooseheart Legion of the
World". Initially, and continuing until 1931, women enjoyed full
membership as an intricate part of the Mooseheart Legion of the World.
The first individual
Moose Legion unit was chartered in 1914 - Western Pennsylvania No. 1, and
established at Director General’s James J. Davis’s own Lodge, Pittsburg
Moose Lodge # 46. Separate Officers for Moose Legion units were
established – a presiding North Moose, a South, East and a West Moose, a
Guiding Moose, a Custodian of the Heart, Argus of the Heart, Herder, and
Treasurer. From 1914 until 1991, the annual presiding officer of the Moose
Legion was known as the Grand North Moose; since 1991 he has been the
International President of the Moose Legion of which Robert Maxey
currently serves the position. Robert Maxey joined the Sandston, Virginia
Moose Lodge #1937 in 1967, is a past President of the Virginia Moose
Association (1994), and is an active member of Old Dominion Moose Legion
#148. Rodney Brandon, the Moose Legion degree's first administrator
carrying the title Grand Regent, devised the first emblem, which
incorporated a moose head centered in a pyramid with the letters "F", "H",
and "C" at its points superimposed over a heart, surrounded by a circle
and containing the words "Alces” and "Machlis", all of which had
individual meanings. The pyramid symbolized the core of our existence,
Faith, Hope and Charity, while the heart symbolized heart of the
fraternity, and the word "Alces" meaning moose or large beast and "Machlis"
meaning leader. The emblem was used in conjunction with the Women of the
Moose until 1991, when a change was made to give both the Moose Legion and
the Women of the Moose specific logo identity. The year 1931 brought the
formal organization of the Women of the Moose, and produced an amicable
split from the men, as a separate and distinct unit of the fraternity. In
the same year, the degree changed its name to "Legion of the Moose", and
continued under this banner until early 1991, when the name changed once
again, to "Moose Legion", with reference to the "Degree of Service".
Moose Legionnaires,
initially committed to building a one-million dollar endowment fund, also
recognized the needs of the newly created "Child City - Mooseheart".
Extending their efforts, they provided the funds to purchase the first
dairy herd and funded construction of the first major building, "Loyalty
Hall" -1914 (now renovated and converted into a learning center). Added
shortly thereafter were "West Legion Hall” - 1917, "East Legion Hall" -
1919 and "Fez Hall" - 1921. In addition, Moose Legionnaires have provided
funds to help with every major project on the Mooseheart campus, and
individually have funded construction of the indoor swimming pool adjacent
to the school (1965), construction and maintenance of the metric track
located at the Illinois Memorial Stadium (1978 & 1994), renovation of Camp
Ross Swimming pool (1999), purchase of more property, including a Bunk
House (2001), and renovation of the House of God (2003). Development of
Mooseheart's Camp Ross became a concern of the Moose Legion in its early
years, and in addition to its obligation for the annual budget, the Moose
Legion committed to a 5 year improvement program, which included the
construction of a new Camp Director's cabin in 1995. Now, brought about by
the volunteer efforts of the Moose Legions, Camp Ross is a full 12 month
per year facility, providing a camping experience for Mooseheart children,
as well as educational and retreat facilities for Moose International and
Mooseheart staff and employees.
Even though the great
amount of monies raised by the first Moose Legionnaires were of
significant value to Mooseheart, these accomplishments are overshadowed by
the commitments made to the "City of Contentment - Moosehaven”. The Moose
Legion provided the original funding available for the purchase of the 63
acre retirement community campus in Orange Park, Florida. (A little known
fact … for many years after the founding of Moosehaven, admission was open
only to those holding the Moose Legion degree.) Traditional monetary
support for Moosehaven continued and took on an added dimension in 1991,
when Moose Legionnaires, adopted the "Moosehaven Seniors Medical Fund",
wherein another major portion of annual dues is diverted directly to the
Moosehaven budget for outside medical service of our seniors. This
permanent project has provided for senior health care at Moosehaven in
excess of three-million dollars. Lodges with active Moose Legion
committees operate at a higher level in membership building and retention,
profitability, and harmony among its membership. The Moose member, once
elevated to the Moose Legion Degree and with an active committee through
which to channel his fraternal desires, exhibits a strong desire to give
of time, talents and leadership ability, thus contributing to Lodge
progress.
Let's consider three
known facts: first… of those Lodge members who are dropped for nonpayment
of dues each year - 9 of every 10 are not Moose Legionnaires. Second… of
those Moose members who achieve Lodge new members sponsor status each year
- 8 of every 10 are Moose Legionnaires, and Third… ninety-eight cents of
every dollar raised at the Lodge level by Moose Legionnaires finds it way
back into the Lodge, in the form of a new or remodeled buildings, purchase
of equipment, payment of insurance premiums or some special project. When
we have an active Moose Legion Committee in our Lodges, we have
individuals who accept projects and get things done in the Lodge.
Considering the positive effect on our Lodges by Moose Legionnaires, it is
imperative we place greater emphasis on Moose Legion membership. We must
bring those qualified for membership in the Moose Legion into our ranks,
and then provide a schedule of activities and projects within the Lodge
through an active Moose Legion Committee. This is accomplished by
acquainting the Moose member with the Moose Legion, educating him on the
value of Moose Legion membership, and elevating him to the Degree of
Service. At this point, we will have added assets to our Lodge by
including a member who will be more likely to remain a Moose member … one
who will sponsor his friends to membership and one who will be willing to
dedicate his efforts through service to the Lodge, community and
fraternity.
A
Moose member who elevates his membership to the Degree of Service does so
out of love for and dedication to the fraternity. He places the needs of
his Lodge, District, State or Province, and the Fraternity ahead of his
personal desire for recognition or advancement… he steps forward, pays his
fee and dues, and then proudly announces…"I'm part of the future, use me
to advance the cause of children and seniors!" |
