One of
the basic precepts of the Loyal Order of Moose is that "no institution
that labors for self and self alone can remain great and mighty, and serve
posterity." Therefore, the two highest degrees conferred on members of the
Moose Fraternity are bestowed as a reward for devotion and service to the
philanthropic programs of the Order. These are the Fellowship and the
Pilgrim Degree of Merit.
When a man is enrolled into the Loyal Order of
Moose, he automatically becomes a member of the first degree.
As a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, you may be asked to join the
Moose Legion, which is the second degree in your advancement within the
fraternity. A good standing
member becomes eligible for advancement to the Second Degree, ( The Moose
Legion Degree of Service ), after he has completed one year of membership
and has sponsored one member into the lodge OR has completed six months of
membership and sponsored three members in to the lodge OR is a former
Moose Legionnaire. |
|
Only those members,
who have shown a genuine desire to help their communities and their
Lodge are asked to become Moose Legionnaires. This second degree allows these men another way to
serve their fellow man. |
| The Moose
Legion will open many new opportunities to you in your Lodge.
Theme parties, sporting events, community service projects and other
unique activities for you and your family. Special social
activities called Moose Legion Celebrations are scheduled at various
Lodges within the membership region of each area Moose Legion. |

Memo from
Paul Curtis, President of Moose Legion
January,
2012
Membership and Retention
I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and the
happiest of New Years. I know that many resolutions for 2012
were made and hopefully one of those would be to continue with
new enthusiasm the support of our kids on the Mooseheart
campus and our seniors on the Moosehaven campus. That is what
we are all about and this is why the greatest majority of our
yearly dues in the Moose Legion goes to the support of those
kids and seniors.
With a cause like this, isn't it amazing that all eligible,
active Lodge members are not part of the Moose Legion? Well,
maybe not? When was the last time that you approached a Lodge
member to join the Moose Legion and told him where his dues
were going? It might have made the difference if he told you
no and certainly provided a feeling of pride and reinforcement
if he said yes.
We as Moose Legionnaires are proud to be a part of the future
of our kids on the Mooseheart campus and our seniors on the
Moosehaven campus. We took the pledge to give of our energy
and substance and as Moose Legionnaires we live and breath
that oath each and every day.
The next time you approach a Lodge member to join the Moose
Legion, let him know where his yearly dues will be going and
the difference his membership will make in the lives of those
kids and seniors. What a selling point that is often
overlooked.
With only four months left in this Moose fiscal year, we have
a long way to go in just a short period of time. With only
54,298 active members as of January 5th, we are down some
5,700 Moose Legionnaires from the nearly 60,000 members we had
to start this Moose fiscal year.
Now is the time to roll up our sleeves, Create Some Interest,
and put forth a concentrated effort on a daily basis for the
remainder of this Moose fiscal year to get these numbers back
up to where they should be. If just 10% of our membership just
signed one member we would be back to that 60,000 member mark
and then continue to grow in the future months.
I am asking all Moose Legion Secretaries, Assistant
Secretaries, Moose Legion Ambassadors, and "Board of
Directors" to please make sure that everyone is working
Membership with their "Eligibility Lists" as well as Retention
by setting up a phone committee and working their "Arrearage
Lists" in their respective Lodges. We can only do this with a
concentrated team effort. Can we count on you?
Moose Legion Honor Month
Moose Legion Honor Month is now half way over and hopefully
many Lodges along with their "Board of Officers" have
expressed their thanks to the Moose Legionnaires within their
Lodge for the giving of their energy, time, and substance over
the previous year with something special in their honor. If
you haven't done so already, please do so and give them the
recognition they so justly deserve. I can tell you for a fact
that your Lodge would not be where it is at today without your
dedicated Moose Legionnaires.
Don't forget that there is still time to earn the special
campaign award, which runs until February 15th. Simply sign
two (2) new or former Moose Legionnaires and get them
transmitted before then and you will receive a Moose Legion
travel garment bag, which will prominently display the Moose
Legion Logo on the front. Of course you will also earn a years
free dues (if you have not already done so this year). What a
win-win proposition and no application fee for the candidate.
I would like to convey a special "Thank You" to all Moose
Legionnaires everywhere for what you have done and for what
you will do for the Moose Legion. This is your month and you
deserve all the recognition that comes your way.
Lodge Moose Legion Committees
As promised, I am again reporting on the importance of a
self-sustaining, functioning Lodge Moose Legion Committee. I
can't express enough how this is the most important Lodge
Committee in place to provide service and revenue to the Lodge
and its Moose Legionnaires through a variety of special
activities for all. The Moose Legion President and his "Board
of Directors" for each Moose Legion jurisdiction should be
working hand-in-hand with the Lodge Moose Legionnaires to
polish all the rough edges on building a successful Lodge
Moose Legion Committee in each and every Lodge in the
jurisdiction at this point in time.
If you want to be known as a great jurisdiction, then this is
the place to start. If you want to measure the success of the
"Board of Directors" in any jurisdiction, all you have to do
is look at the number of successful Lodge Moose Legion
Committees within their area of responsibility. How successful
are you?
These committees should be self-sustaining through a variety
of fundraisers and provide numerous activities for all Lodge
members with special reduced or free events for the Moose
Legionnaires in each and every Lodge. This is a tremendous new
member tool for signing up Moose Legionnaires as well as a
proven Retention tool for getting existing Moose Legionnaires
to renew their dues each year. Create Some Interest and
develop the Lodge Moose Legion Committee in your Lodge.
Special Projects and
Fundraising
On behalf of Councilman Danny Williams and myself as well as
our Moose Legion Director and all other Council Members, we
would like to express our deepest gratitude for the tremendous
job all 170 Moose Legion jurisdictions are doing this year.
Moose Legionnaires are the greatest fundraisers to be found
anywhere.
Conferral Teams
All Moose Legion jurisdiction "Conferral Teams" should be
putting the final touches on their parts and floorwork to
prepare for the International Ritual Competition in Tampa,
Florida this June. It would certainly be rewarding to see at
least 25 to 30 teams competing this year.
Even if you are not going to competition in Tampa at this
year's International Convention and Ritual Competition, you
should still be finalizing your parts and floorwork in your
individual jurisdictions. Nothing impresses a new Moose Legion
candidate more than a memorized and professionally presented
Conferral at a Moose Legion Celebration.
Valentines Day
Just a reminder that Valentines Day is coming up in February.
Don't forget your wife or lady friend on this special occasion
for standing behind you in the pursuit of your Moose Legion
activities. They have given up much so we could succeed in our
Moose Legion endeavors so let's put them on a pedestal this
special day. You won't regret it if you do, but you certainly
will regret it if you don't.
Fraternally Yours,
Paul Curtis
Moose Legion President

Memo from
Bob Neff, Director of Ritual and Higher Degrees
January, 2012
Moose Legion Honor Month
Moose Legion Honor Month is now in full swing. Many Lodges
have scheduled programs to pay tribute to the Moose
Legionnaires for all the work and support they have given over
the years.
A special campaign for sponsoring Moose Legion applications in
recognition of Moose Legion Honor Month is also fully
underway. Each member who sponsors at least two (2) accepted
new or former members into the Moose Legion will earn a
sponsor award. They must be reported with application dates
between December 15th and February 15th to qualify. Please get
them secured and to your jurisdiction Secretary as soon as you
can so he can get them transmitted.
A Moose Legion travel garment bag will be awarded to each
qualifying member. The bag will prominently display the Moose
Legion logo on the front. It can be used to transport your
regalia or other suits / clothing.
Simply Create Some Interest among the members of your lodge.
Get a copy of the eligibility list and invite your qualified
lodge members to advance to the Degree of Service with you.
Don't forget to ask for the former member list also. Often
members never really intended not to renew and would welcome
an invitation to return to active status. It is up to us to
reach out to them.
Guide to Success Handbook
The recently revised "Guide to Success" handbooks are
available online as PDF or from Catalog Sales for just $2.00
per copy (plus applicable taxes and shipping). There is a lot
of good information in the book. I encourage you to get a few
copies for your Lodge Moose Legion Committee(s). Ask for Item
Number 1014.
It is a great tool to help organize the Lodge Moose Legion
Committee. It includes a suggested agenda, various references
to the Code of Rules, a Moose Legion Orientation program
outline and much more. Order several copies and distribute
them today.
Ritual and Ritual Competition
The 46th Annual Moose Legion Ritual Competition will be taking
place in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, June 30th and Sunday,
July 1st 2012.
Entry forms are posted on the Moose International web site
and are now being received. We encourage all staffs to raise
some funds to cover some of the cost to send a staff and get
your entries in to reserve your time slots without delay.
This year we will have a joint Ritual Awards Banquet on Monday
evening, July 2, 2012, along with the Women of the Moose
Ritualists. We are excited to be able to offer this program in
honor of these members. It should be a great evening of
recognition for all our fraternal ritual members.
We are also making plans for a Moose Legion Ritual Judges
Seminar and qualifying school. It will likely be in the
spring. Watch for further details as they develop.
Retention Efforts
By now you may be getting tired of hearing talk about
retention. However, it is a real and vital part of our program
and indeed future existence. December is typically a larger
dues reporting month. Thus, January 1st is a substantial time
to see significant arrearage lists in our fraternal units.
January 2012 was no exception. Moose Legionnaires are needed
along with Council of Higher Degrees members and all others to
implement a campaign to contact those members who have not
renewed. If we wait for someone else to do it, we will slip
further during the wait. Our collective efforts can bear
fruit. We must step up and take action as individuals to make
something happen.
Please secure the arrearage list and start making contact with
our members. Remind them of why we exist. Remind them of what
we (through their continued membership) do for children and
seniors. Remind them of our member benefits and the savings it
can provide them.
Some of them simply need to be reminded to renew and to feel
like someone actually cares enough to call. We need to be that
caring member. Each of us can make a difference. Please take
action to save a fellow Brother, Co-Worker or Moose
Legionnaire by reaching out to them today. Thank you.
Cordially & Fraternally,
Robert A. Neff

Truly helping us to grow in strength during our 2011-2012

Christmas for someone you know by inviting them into our
fraternal world with the gift of membership and help us do an
even better job of caring for children and seniors at
Mooseheart and Moosehaven. There are folks waiting to be
asked.

Message
from Mark l. Klein, International Moose Legion Vice President
Membership Retention
Gentlemen:
While going on-line to our
International website, I came across the attached article
regarding membership retention from May of this year.
This message is equally as vital and necessary today as the
day it was first disseminated. I can’t impress any
stronger how an effective membership retention program goes to
the very core of the furtherance of our Order. It
certainly wouldn’t hurt if the above attached message was to
be reproduced for every Moose Legion bulletin board in each
our Moose Lodges. It certainly wouldn’t hurt if the
Chairman of the Retention Committee (the Jr. Past President)
and the Board of Directors were to make the rounds of the
Moose Legion Committees within each of our Moose Lodges to
promote membership retention as well as new membership
production. On every level of our Fraternity there
should always be a report and information in regard to these
foundations of our existence. And certainly the Moose
Legion should be no exception.
In fact, as the care takers of the Fraternity, it
should be up to us to preach the word louder and stronger than
all others. Please be part of the solution by getting
serious about conserving the members we have, increasing new
membership, and restoring former members. I certainly
don’t expect the Moose Legion Secretary to accomplish this
single handedly. With the assistance of the entire Board
of Directors, the Assistant Moose Legion Secretaries, the
Moose Legion Chairmen on the Moose Lodge level, and a band of
gung-ho Moose Legionnaires, we can accomplish the upper limits
of any scenario. I promise that a little hard work and a
bit of effort will pay major dividends because the Moose
Legion is a worthy enterprise.
Thanks for all that you do,
Mark

Moose Legion Ritual Article
August 2011
BY: Lonnie Mudgett - Chairman Ritual Judging
Committee
Moose Legion Conferral
Competition is over for this year and it is time to start
planning for the next one in Tampa Fl. June 29 - July 4, 2012.
Every ritualist has heard the same thing for years, words,
words, words. So the question is, how do you fix it? First,
read the book, at least read your part. But you must actually
‘see the words’ as you read. Do not just skim over them. Do
this (reading and seeing of words) a lot.
|

Lonnie Mudgett
Chairman
Ritual Judging Committee
ritual-lonnie@att.net
|
|
Next, say the part. Did you say all the words? Truthfully, you
really can’t be sure, can you? Now get someone to follow you
in the book and watch each word. Do not rush through your
words; rather take your time, its practice. Ask the person
following the words to stop you as soon as you miss, miss
pronounce, substitute a word or miss a pause to stop you and
tell what you did.
Then, repeat the part and continue on. Again do this a lot.
Say your part every day and read the part “seeing the words”
and remember, don’t rush. Now ask yourself, do you want to be
a champion, or just a player?
In another article we will talk about floor work and
impressiveness. For now let’s talk about teams. There were 19
teams at the competition in California and I thank each of
them for competing. I hope that in Tampa we have at least 40.
It is up to us to Create Some Interest in the program. Start
practicing and raising funds NOW!!
The judges would love to put on a school or judge a
competition for you. How do you set it up? Your Team Captain,
Secretary or Ambassador may contact Robert A. Neff, Director
of Ritual & Higher Degrees at
rneff@mooseintl.org -
Office: 630-966-2227 to make such a request.
What are the requirements for requesting a school? It must be
scheduled in advance and must be for more than one team. If a
school is requested and approved, Moose International pays the
travel for one assigned judge and you pay the hotel and per
diem. If you just have a competition and request a judge then
you pay travel, hotel and per diem.
If you have a competition and a school, Moose International
will pay travel for one judge and you pay for the hotel and
per diem. If you request more than one judge you pay the
travel, hotel and per diem for the additional judge(s).
Something extra you could have at your school is to invite the
board of directors for all jurisdictions in your area. The
judge will include a session for them. It is important that
the directors know the proper manner to set up and conduct a
meeting.
We are looking for Moose Legionnaires who have a desire to
become a judge. We will be scheduling a school and testing for
potential judges, once we know who and where they will come
from. Attendance will be at your own expense.
If you are interested in possibly becoming a ritual judge,
please submit your name, MID number, address and phone number
to myself or to Robert Neff,

Office: 630-966-2227. You can contact me, Lonnie Mudgett

from Mark l. Klein, International Moose Legion Vice President
Moose Legion Council President’s
Pet Project
Gentlemen:
There have been some questions as to the International Moose
Legion Council President’s pet project. For the past
couple of years our International Moose Legion Council
President has undertaken a project of his personal concern to
assist Mooseheart and/or Moosehaven in addition to the regular
programs for which we donate. This year, President Paul
Curtis made a decision along with input from Director Bob Neff
and Director of Mooseheart Operations Scott Hart to aid our
Mooseheart Camp Ross with some additional heavy duty John
Deere landscaping equipment at a $15,000.00 approximate value.
There is no mandatory dollar amount of giving required.
However, all Moose Legion jurisdictions within our Fraternity
are requested to make such donations for this project as they
feel they can afford as it will benefit the care and

History:
History of the Moose Legion
The "Moose Legion" or "Degree of Service" was created by resolution
during the annual convention of the Supreme Lodge in Cincinnati, Ohio,
and adopted by the Supreme Council in 1913 as the "Mooseheart Legion of the
World". Initially, and continuing until 1931, women enjoyed full
membership as an intricate part of the Mooseheart Legion of the World.
The first individual
Moose Legion unit was chartered in 1914 - Western Pennsylvania No. 1, and
established at Director General’s James J. Davis’s own Lodge, Pittsburg
Moose Lodge # 46. Separate Officers for Moose Legion units were
established – a presiding North Moose, a South, East and a West Moose, a
Guiding Moose, a Custodian of the Heart, Argus of the Heart, Herder, and
Treasurer. From 1914 until 1991, the annual presiding officer of the Moose
Legion was known as the Grand North Moose; since 1991 he has been the
International President of the Moose Legion of which Robert Maxey
currently serves the position. Robert Maxey joined the Sandston, Virginia
Moose Lodge #1937 in 1967, is a past President of the Virginia Moose
Association (1994), and is an active member of Old Dominion Moose Legion
#148. Rodney Brandon, the Moose Legion degree's first administrator
carrying the title Grand Regent, devised the first emblem, which
incorporated a moose head centered in a pyramid with the letters "F", "H",
and "C" at its points superimposed over a heart, surrounded by a circle
and containing the words "Alces” and "Machlis", all of which had
individual meanings. The pyramid symbolized the core of our existence,
Faith, Hope and Charity, while the heart symbolized heart of the
fraternity, and the word "Alces" meaning moose or large beast and "Machlis"
meaning leader. The emblem was used in conjunction with the Women of the
Moose until 1991, when a change was made to give both the Moose Legion and
the Women of the Moose specific logo identity. The year 1931 brought the
formal organization of the Women of the Moose, and produced an amicable
split from the men, as a separate and distinct unit of the fraternity. In
the same year, the degree changed its name to "Legion of the Moose", and
continued under this banner until early 1991, when the name changed once
again, to "Moose Legion", with reference to the "Degree of Service".
Moose Legionnaires,
initially committed to building a one-million dollar endowment fund, also
recognized the needs of the newly created "Child City - Mooseheart".
Extending their efforts, they provided the funds to purchase the first
dairy herd and funded construction of the first major building, "Loyalty
Hall" -1914 (now renovated and converted into a learning center). Added
shortly thereafter were "West Legion Hall” - 1917, "East Legion Hall" -
1919 and "Fez Hall" - 1921. In addition, Moose Legionnaires have provided
funds to help with every major project on the Mooseheart campus, and
individually have funded construction of the indoor swimming pool adjacent
to the school (1965), construction and maintenance of the metric track
located at the Illinois Memorial Stadium (1978 & 1994), renovation of Camp
Ross Swimming pool (1999), purchase of more property, including a Bunk
House (2001), and renovation of the House of God (2003). Development of
Mooseheart's Camp Ross became a concern of the Moose Legion in its early
years, and in addition to its obligation for the annual budget, the Moose
Legion committed to a 5 year improvement program, which included the
construction of a new Camp Director's cabin in 1995. Now, brought about by
the volunteer efforts of the Moose Legions, Camp Ross is a full 12 month
per year facility, providing a camping experience for Mooseheart children,
as well as educational and retreat facilities for Moose International and
Mooseheart staff and employees.
Even though the great
amount of monies raised by the first Moose Legionnaires were of
significant value to Mooseheart, these accomplishments are overshadowed by
the commitments made to the "City of Contentment - Moosehaven”. The Moose
Legion provided the original funding available for the purchase of the 63
acre retirement community campus in Orange Park, Florida. (A little known
fact … for many years after the founding of Moosehaven, admission was open
only to those holding the Moose Legion degree.) Traditional monetary
support for Moosehaven continued and took on an added dimension in 1991,
when Moose Legionnaires, adopted the "Moosehaven Seniors Medical Fund",
wherein another major portion of annual dues is diverted directly to the
Moosehaven budget for outside medical service of our seniors. This
permanent project has provided for senior health care at Moosehaven in
excess of three-million dollars. Lodges with active Moose Legion
committees operate at a higher level in membership building and retention,
profitability, and harmony among its membership. The Moose member, once
elevated to the Moose Legion Degree and with an active committee through
which to channel his fraternal desires, exhibits a strong desire to give
of time, talents and leadership ability, thus contributing to Lodge
progress.
Let's consider three
known facts: first… of those Lodge members who are dropped for nonpayment
of dues each year - 9 of every 10 are not Moose Legionnaires. Second… of
those Moose members who achieve Lodge new members sponsor status each year
- 8 of every 10 are Moose Legionnaires, and Third… ninety-eight cents of
every dollar raised at the Lodge level by Moose Legionnaires finds it way
back into the Lodge, in the form of a new or remodeled buildings, purchase
of equipment, payment of insurance premiums or some special project. When
we have an active Moose Legion Committee in our Lodges, we have
individuals who accept projects and get things done in the Lodge.
Considering the positive effect on our Lodges by Moose Legionnaires, it is
imperative we place greater emphasis on Moose Legion membership. We must
bring those qualified for membership in the Moose Legion into our ranks,
and then provide a schedule of activities and projects within the Lodge
through an active Moose Legion Committee. This is accomplished by
acquainting the Moose member with the Moose Legion, educating him on the
value of Moose Legion membership, and elevating him to the Degree of
Service. At this point, we will have added assets to our Lodge by
including a member who will be more likely to remain a Moose member … one
who will sponsor his friends to membership and one who will be willing to
dedicate his efforts through service to the Lodge, community and
fraternity.
A
Moose member who elevates his membership to the Degree of Service does so
out of love for and dedication to the fraternity. He places the needs of
his Lodge, District, State or Province, and the Fraternity ahead of his
personal desire for recognition or advancement… he steps forward, pays his
fee and dues, and then proudly announces…"I'm part of the future, use me
to advance the cause of children and seniors!" |
