Lady Luck Smiles on Strasburg Man

Queen of

WOODSTOCK -- They say a man's home is his castle, and in Scott
Hockman's case, he has the Queen of Hearts to thank for his.
The 37-year-old won $100,000 on Jan. 5 in the Woodstock Moose Lodge
575's Queen of Hearts game. That money will come in handy when he closes
on his house later this month.
"The game had been going on for 51 weeks," lodge
administrator Denny Renner said.
A deck of 54 cards -- including jokers -- are placed
face down on a board with numbers on the back of them. They're
double-sealed. Players buy $1 tickets to get their names placed in a
tumbler, Renner said. He said there was a drawing every Thursday night,
and the person whose name was drawn got to pick a card, hoping to turn
over the Queen of Hearts.
The jackpot each week depended on how many tickets had
been sold so far in the game. The tickets were thrown out each week.
On Jan. 5, the game was down to four cards, Renner
said. The $100,000 limit was reached 2 1⁄2 months ago, he said.
Hockman, who is a member of Strasburg Moose 1319, said
he started playing the game about a month or two ago, spending about $50
or $60. On the night he won, there were about 25,000 tickets in the
tumbler, he said.
Hockman was at his job at RR Donnelly & Sons when he
got a phone call that his name had been drawn and the card number he
wrote on the back of his ticket was the winner.
"It was a shocker," he said.
Left shaking and speechless, Hockman barely slept that
night. He had recently signed papers for a contract on a house.
"My loan officer was the second guy that I actually
called, saying, 'We might need to hold off on that loan,'" recalled
Hockman, who is engaged to Carrie Baldwin and doesn't have children.
This will be the first house he's owned, the Strasburg
native said.
"It just couldn't have come at a better time for me,"
he said. "It makes that a whole lot easier."
Baldwin was thrilled with his big win, too.
"She was one minute crying, the next minute jumping for
joy, and then crying again," Hockman said. "I'm still speechless. It's
kind of unbelievable. I know people were coming from everywhere playing
that thing.
"Thank you very much to the Woodstock Moose and all
their officers and employees, and everybody involved with the game," he
said.
Renner was also grateful for the extra work his
employees did, and for all of the members of the Moose and their guests.
Toward the end of the game, people were coming from as away as Roanoke,
Lynchburg and West Virginia.
During the life of the game, $373,365 -- from which the
big prize was taken -- was raised, Renner said. Thirty percent of the
proceeds go back to the lodge for operations, and 10 percent went to the
Virginia Office of Charitable Gaming, Renner said.
Already, the lodge has donated $30,000 to charities
within the community and $20,000 to Moose International's Mooseheart, a
home and school for needy children, and Moosehaven, which houses
seniors, Renner said.
"[The game] brought us in a good revenue that we could
give away," he said. "We've been taking care of a lot of the charities
here. That's what the Moose Lodge is all about."
While Hockman's win was from the first Queen of Hearts game Lodge 575
had, the second one starts Jan. 26.
"We started selling tickets today, and they're already
coming," Renner said.

Piney River Moose Lodge
has track record of service
posted

By Katrina Koerting -
NewEraProgress.com Amherst VA.
Trophies, plaques and pictures of youth teams sponsored
by Piney River Moose Lodge sponsor line
part of the wood-paneled left wall of the lodge.
The opposite wall is covered in plaques the lodge has
received in recognition of the service it has
performed over its 30 years of existence for the community and
Moose International.
Donnie Maddox, the administrator of the lodge, stood
admiring the photos of the children he and his “family fraternity”
have helped. Maddox is also the only member of the 170-member
Piney River Moose Lodge to receive his Pilgrim Degree, the highest
degree attainable within Moose International. About one out of
6,000 members receive their Pilgrim each year.
The Moose Lodge is an international volunteer
organization of men and women that focus on
programs for children and elderly and bringing
communities together.

Donnie Maddox, the administrator of the Piney River Moose Lodge,
is also the only member of the 170-member Piney River Moose Lodge
to receive his Pilgrim Degree, the highest degree attainable
within Moose International. |
“It felt great,” he said about receiving the honor.
“It takes a lot of effort and a lot of work.”
In order to become a Pilgrim, Maddox had to obtain two
other degrees — the degree of service to become part of the Moose
legion and the fellowship degree. Among the requirements are
holding a leadership position within the lodge at a higher level,
and serving in the organization for a certain amount of time
depending on the degree.
Despite the amount of time and work, Maddox said he has
enjoyed the experience since becoming a member of the Loyal Order
of Moose. Although he does not have a specific favorite project,
he said he loves doing things for the kids and seeing their joy at
Mooseheart, a trip he’s made three times.
Mooseheart Child City and School is a year-round
residential facility for about 300 children of needy families
supported by the Moose fraternal organization. It is located on a
1,000-acre campus, 38 miles west of Chicago. Mooseheart has houses
that are maintained by the individual lodges, certified schools,
athletic programs and religious services for the children.
Children from infancy through high school across the
country that qualify and are sponsored by a lodge can attend if
space allows. The child does not have to be related to a Moose
member.
“That’s probably the biggest thing in the world, seeing
their appreciation,” Maddox said. “They are. They really are.
That’s not just blowing smoke, they really are appreciative.”
Maddox said he decided to join in 1990 because a lot of
his friends were playing ball for the Moose Lodge near where he
lived in Alexandria and he was going to play too. Although he
didn’t end up playing for the Lodge, he decided to sign up the
first day he visited because he learned about Mooseheart and the
programs the Lodge offers for kids.
“It seemed like the right thing to do,” Maddox said.
When Maddox moved to Amherst in 1995, he transferred
his membership to the Piney River lodge and in 2001 he became the
administrator, a job he devotes about four hours a day to, not
including the time spent on weekends with other moose members
doing activities. He also has served as a district president for
two years, a Moose Legion president for one year and has been one
of the marketing representatives for Virginia since 2007.
As administrator Maddox is responsible for keeping up
the financial and community service records and the membership. He
also sends reports and puts together a newsletter that he sends to
the eight other lodges in their district. The district stretches
from Bedford to Farmville and includes lodges in Appomattox and
Lynchburg. There are 94 lodges throughout Virginia.
“Donnie’s done a wonderful job down here,” said Charles
McMurray, the governor, or president, of the Piney River lodge.
“He knows the ins and outs of everything. If it wasn’t for Donnie,
the place would probably shut down. He keeps this place rolling.
He’s taught me a lot.”
As governor and administrator, McMurray and Maddox work
hand and hand on a lot of the club business, including working
with other members to decide how they will give back to the
community.
Each lodge is responsible for doing community service
as a group. The lodge averages between 250 hours and 300 hours
every three months, but a lot of members will do community service
outside of the lodge projects, even though Moose International
will not count individual projects towards the hours.
Since the Piney River Lodge is made up of people from
both Amherst and Nelson counties, they focus on projects for both
counties. They sponsor youth athletic teams, offer a $1,000
college scholarship, promote a program that teaches kids about
safe ways to surf the Internet, provide money to local
organizations including churches and the Piney River Fire
Department and host events for the children in Amherst and Nelson
counties.
Some of these events include the Halloween party, movie
nights once a month at the lodge and most recently, Snacks With
Santa, which was held on Dec. 18. They also donate the lodge hall
to the community for local fundraisers and functions, like Relay
for Life fundraisers and churches’ activities.
Another project the lodge just finished up is a food
box drive where members collected nonperishable food items for the
needy.
“With the way the economy is, there’s a lot of hungry kids,” said
McMurray, who became a member in 2004.
In order to become a member, the applicant must be
sponsored by a current member and not have a criminal record. The
members of the lodge will then vote on the applicant at one of
their meetings and if approved, the applicant will be a member
within two weeks.
The Piney River Lodge meets on the first and third
Tuesday of each month. There is also a $20 initiation fee and
every member must pay dues. Each lodge has a different cost. The
Piney River dues are $45 a year. If someone gets their Moose
Legion degree, there is a $10 initiation fee and $17 annual dues.
Another key part of the organization is fellowship. The
bar, pool table, numerous round tables and the TV in the social
quarters are evidence of the time the members spend together.
The Piney River Moose Lodge is open Friday through
Sunday. On Friday there is often karaoke and sometimes an open mic
night. Once a month the members will have a steak dinner. On
Sundays the members will watch a game or race on the TV.
Maddox noted the family atmosphere as a way the Moose
Lodge stands apart from other organizations and the lodge’s small
size.
“The friendly atmosphere is different than a large
lodge because everybody knows each other,” Maddox said. “It brings
more fellowship together and there’s more of a family atmosphere
than it is in a large lodge.”
Some lodges can have more than 5,000 members.
McMurray agreed. “It’s a home away from home.”

The local citizens of the East Hanover community brought their pets to

Easter Seals Christmas Party
Centreville Lodge #2168
posted 12/12/2011

On Saturday, December 3rd, the Women of the Moose,
along with members of the American Legion Post 85, were honored to host
this year’s annual Easter Seals children for a Visit with Santa. Our
Santa, Charlie Brown, once again made beautiful magic arriving aboard a
City of Fairfax Fire Truck and surprising 27 little children. Each
child was called up by name and got to sit on Santa’s lap while he
assisted in opening that child’s special Christmas gift.
Sherry Lemnah from the American Legion Post 85 has been
organizing this very special event for over 15 years and now we know
why! Watching these children truly tugs at your heart string – even with
their illness – all you could see were beautiful smiles and happy
dispositions.
Sherry came with her ‘band of elves’ who organized the
room to accommodate each family and to assist each family member with
bringing them food and drink -- they wanted for nothing. The Women of
the Moose provided a hearty lunch that was served to the families by the
many volunteers present. We were also fortunate to have several teenage
helpers join the fun as well – Sarbrina Hunter, Joey Fenimore and Terry
Wolfe. Many, many thanks to you for taking time out of your busy
Saturday and helping with this worthwhile even.
Sherry, who is also a recent transfer-in to our
Chapter, indicated that with everything going as smoothly as it did, all
children and family members happy, this may be a recurring event at our
facilities. We may even have enticed a couple of the volunteers to
become Women of the Moose members.
This is what the Christmas Season is all about!!!!

In years past the American Legion was doing this. The organizer
came to us to ask for help. We had a great time doing this. Most
of the kids were severely disabled. Charlie Brown (he looks just
like Santa) even at times broke in to tears because of these kids.
The kids were amazing. We are looking forward to doing this again
next year. |

In Portsmouth, folks took action Sunday to ensure a
Merry Christmas for area kids in need.
This afternoon, the District One Virginia Moose
Association held its second annual benefit for Toys for Tots. The
event was free to the public. All you had to bring was a new
unwrapped toy. During Sunday's event, organizers say they were off
to a great start.
"We want all children to have something at
Christmastime, something to look forward to, something to be happy with.
And it's going very well, right now we have six boxes we've already
filled, we have three more to come. We gave Toys for Tots 15 ½
boxes, plus a little over $2600, we're hope we topped out this year and
it looks like we're gonna do that." said Gene Payne.
Toys for Tots is a Marine Corps Reserve charity for
children. Toys collected will be given to needy families just in
time for the holidays.

Mooseriders
Awesome Weekend!
This past weekend your Mooserider State Board met with District 12
at the Wytheville lodge to discuss the upcoming State Rally.
This get together went very well. We now have a game plan
for having a Virginia Mooserider State Rally.
September 13 - September 16, 2012
Mark this on your calendars!
In attendance to our meeting was the Mayor of Wytheville Trent
Crewe along with members of District 12 Mooseriders, around 20
members. I was very impressed with the Mayor and the support
of the town of Wytheville. They are very excited we are
going to have our event in their town and they will be very
accommodating to us. Also, your Mooserider Board met with
Ron Porter with Safe Surfin to come up with a game plan for the
rally. Our main theme for this event is Safe Surfin.
We are hoping to attract someone or people of importance and this
may happen, but we will not spill the beans until we have definite
answers.
We want all you guys and gals to know your Mooserider State Board
is working very hard to make Virginia Mooseriders special.
We have been saying we are a new 21st century freight train
whistling full steam ahead and we would love to have everybody on
board with us.
A new District
On our weekend adventure your Mooserider State Board traveled to
District 13 and met with members interested in Mooseriders.
We had a few in attendance and some who could not make it, but
want to be a part of our group. I must put out a special thank you
to Tom Watson of Abingdon a member of Washington County Family
Moose Lodge for putting together a meeting and showing us great
hospitality.
While there we signed up new members and Tom will be signing more
this week. District 13 thank you for climbing on the freight
train.
Update
Your Mooserider State Board has raised another $100.00 to add to
the money we have already raised for Special Olympics. Out
total is now $ 1,126.68, so come on Mooseriders get crack-en.
As for the Special Olympics we have been throwing around the idea
of having a poker run on that Saturday with a guaranteed high hand
payout and doing blessing of the bikes after the poker run then
joining in on the opening ceremonies. This is just an idea
at this point.
We want everybody to know that we are working hard to make the
Virginia Mooseriders great. I hope all of you guys can see
what we are doing for our Moose members motorcycle community.
We are making big efforts to get to every district and promote and
to prove that we are organized and we are here to stay and to
support you on being a Mooserider.
If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email
one of us. Our email addresses are on the website
www.vamooseriders.com.
Thank you,
Steve Baxter
